Editing
The Editing process, can often change a recording from a demo, to a album. An editor is the person who goes through recorded music and to simply put it, fixes things and prepares a recorded work for a mix engineer. An editor will fix any of the incorrect notes or not cleanly played notes that were part of the final take. But, this is just one of the editors jobs.
An editor also aligns audio to be played consistently with the tempo of the song. This allows the song to flow smoothly from start to finish without any out of time instruments.
Along with just correcting time and bad notes, an editor will also deal with adding any samples to the track in order to reinforce the instruments being played. For example, if a kick drum is recorded and has a great low frequency prescience, but does not have the attack needed to really bring it out for a mix engineer, then an additional kick can be added to every kick through the song to add what is missing from the original kick.
Another growing part of the editors job is to clean up vocal tracks. With the growing concern for everything on a record to be perfectly in tune, the vocal track has come deeply under a microscope. Through the use of software and digital editing, a vocal that has parts that are out of tune, can be manipulated to fit precisely with the key and tempo of the song.
